Could be 4 stars - but is practically unusable
Updating to reflect the lasted version:
PING gave an accurate explanation why it drains the battery - but doesnt react to most simple way to deal with it:
MAKE THE Heart Rate Monitoring OPTIONAL!!
I dont care about my heart rate when playing golf - but rounds of more than 4 hrs DO HAPPEN! And Im not always starting with a 100% fully charged battery.
Turning off the HR sensor is the most effective battery saver: at least make it an optional setting!
-----------
The Apple watch is waiting to become a useful tool for golfers - and PING provides a good approach for playing a round.
Yet - and thats the killer - with watchOS 3 it turns on heart rate monitoring when you start a round and this is draining the battery within 2hrs. I gave it 2 tries with a full battery and never made it past the front nine before running into low battery.
PING: if you read this, make the HR monitoring optional via user switch (or turn it off at all). Im sure it can then last a full round and I will happily remove this berating.
The best app - when practically unusable - isnt worth many stars.
On the more positive side:
The UI (with WatchOS 3) is now sufficiently fast and presents actual distances.
Scoring and navigation between holes is done nicely.
Switching between green-view and hole-view is easy - but one cant adjust the flag position and not zoom in to fairways to plan for a layup shot. :(
Swing metrics and practices: no review; its just not my thing. One can become a good player and practice well without these toys.
Summary:
PING is on a good way - but currently the app is not usable to play a round of golf.
Fix it and it will be 4 stars with room to eventually get 5.
